playing with my squares

Looking at the photos, they pretty much all look the same. This isn't even all the different combinations or pictures I took. Finally I just sort of got tired of it, so the last one is the one I stuck with. Hope to get it sewn together sometime this decade.

Pieces...

I had a few problems with my last squares because of errors in cutting. I realized only too late that i had cut 6" not 61/2". SO last weekend i got more fabric and re-did steps B-D. I was on a roll so then i pieced the rows together. My last step will be to sew the rows to the rows. It was really fun to sew today and get over the despair from my cutting errors.

Next stop binding selection. I am probably going to use a sheet for my backing.

quilt squares

I finally got all of my quilt squares sewn together this weekend and the top is done. Now I just need to decide on a binding and backing. I'm working off of a different pattern (Happy Hour)than the rest of the group - I needed a pattern with bigger squares to compensate for the elephant fabric. I had a lot of trimming to do because the minky fabric was horrible to work with and the squares that included it turned out smaller than the rest so I had to trim all of them down to size. The batik star fabric also didn't seem to want to hold the stiches properly and bunched up a lot. But, it all turned out ok in the end. I even got most of the seams to line up when I sewed all the squares together in the final step.

What's Next?

After you've got all your squares done, you'll need to begin assembling your quilt. Red Barn does a wonderful job of explaing this, so click here.

If you're tackling your own quilting, you may want to check Red Barn's information here.

More than you've ever wanted to know about quilt backings, click here. Don't forget that you can tie your quilt together, click here.

Once you've assembled and sandwhiched everything together, you'll need to bind it.

For information on how to bind a quilt, click on the photo below.

Or, check out Red Barn's binding tutorial, here.
